Rollin "Terry" Fairbanks
Rollin J. “Terry” Fairbanks MD MS is senior vice president and chief quality & safety officer at MedStar Health, and professor of emergency medicine at Georgetown University. He is responsible for clinical quality, patient safety, infection prevention, and health equity at MedStar Health, a 10-hospital academic health system in the Baltimore/Washington region. Dr. Fairbanks an emergency physician, human factors engineer, safety science researcher, and former paramedic and general aviation pilot. He founded MedStar Health’s National Center for Human Factors in Healthcare, and has authored more than 200 publications and edited a book on healthcare safety, and served in safety advisory roles for the US, British, Spanish, and Australian governments. Dr. Fairbanks is an elected Fellow in the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, appointed member of the National Academies of Sciences Engineering and Medicine Board on Human-Systems Integration, Chair of Board, IHI Certified Patient Safety Professionals (CPPS), and recipient of the 2025 John Eisenberg Award.
